My name is Janeice Samantha Tate or Sam, the name everyone knows me by. I'm 29 and this is my first year as a college student. I want to be on the study abroad team in order to contribute towards helping communities that are suffering to function economically. I also want to help improve their agricultural needs, provide better living conditions, and to illustrate the importance of a good education. This commitment is not only for my personal growth but hoping to accomplish an improvement in the well-being of others in an underserved population. Throughout my life, I have experienced loss and suffering just like most people have. However, my past has shaped me into a person who desires to help other people that may be struggling around me through their own, unique, life-struggles. During a brief but life changing personal experience, I was taught how truly lucky I am to have basic necessities such as shelter, food, and even water. Experiences I've had in the past were only temporary but for certain communities or groups of people in the world this is something they go through on a daily basis, day in and day out. I want to be an invaluable part of change in people’s lives who currently suffer from these conditions. Study abroad is a positive and progressive step in the direction that I want to lead my life. I feel as though I can contribute to this program by means of personal experience from my past. I will also contribute immensely through my ability to adaptively learn, help others compassionately, and elicit positive hope to the communities we are going to help and to the team members who want to be part of something more than just their self. I am excited to help furnish the team with supportive ideas on how to best help Hayfield solve agricultural complications, educational development dilemmas, and any other economic or individual growth concerns the community may have. I’m looking forward to being immersed in the Jamaican culture by learning what I can and making a difference in the lives of the people who live there.

Youthlinc is a Utah non-profit organization dedicated to creating lifetime humanitarians through local and international service. Service Year students contribute 80 hours of local service before their international service trip. In monthly meetings, students - mentored by adult professionals - take leadership roles in planning educational, community health, business development, vocational training and cultural exchange initiatives that are implemented in a small village outside Pursat, Cambodia next summer.
